Catcher stayed close to home on Long Island where he lives with Sandy Washburn and his uncles, Trader and Royal. Catcher was named for the legendary New York comedy club Catch a Rising Star. He and Sandy excelled in obedience and agility. Catcher debuted in obedience in January 2010 and earned his Companion Dog title in three trials with scores of 200, 199.5 and 199.5, taking two High in Trial awards. He finished his 8-trial novice career with eight 1st placements, 6 High in Trials and a 200 score. Next, Catcher finished his CDX in short order with placements, including a 199.5 for HIT.

Catcher finished his Utility Dog title with two 1sts and a 2nd, two High in Trials and two High Combined awards. This put him into the GRCA’s Obedience Dog Hall of Fame four months after starting obedience and before he even turned two years old.

One year to the day from his first CD leg, Catcher finished his Obedience Trial Championship with another High Combined award. What a team! Catcher finished his UDX2 a few weeks after his OTCH, and went on to finish his UDX3, his OM4 and earn a Top 25 All-Breed Obedience ranking!

Although obedience was their primary focus, Catcher also played in agility, where he was fast and focused. In October 2010, Catcher ventured into the conformation scene and earned his CCA under three breeder-evaluators, Sandra Dunn, Elizabeth Greenfield and Cheryl Blair.

Catcher died just after his 3rd birthday after a short illness. We don’t yet know the cause of the illness but it appears to be stomach cancer. To lose a young dog is always hard but to lose such a rising star is hard to comprehend.

The Dance

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared ‘neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you’d ever say goodbye?

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn’t I a king?
But if I’d only known how the king would fall
Hey, who’s to say you know? I might have changed it all

And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance

Yes, my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I’d have had to miss the dance

Goodbye, sweet Catcher, rest in peace.
